The proposed care home in Market Drayton was located within a complex and constrained site, providing topographical challenges as well as boundary limitations. The design approach for this scheme was to utilise the levels across the site and provide a split-level building across 2 and a half storeys to both the upper and lower levels with a lower ground floor.
Contextual analysis proved varied, with buildings of all heights, mass and elevational detail in the surrounding area. This care home proposed a unique approach to providing the best possible outcome, creating the visual effect of 2 separate buildings, traditional masonry construction in aesthetic, connected by a contemporary timber and zinc extension which spanned the height difference of the site. Large expanses of glazing were proposed across all elevations, with traditional design features, such as headers, sills and chimneys, providing the details aesthetics.
An impressive, 2 story gable of glazing was proposed as the main feature, providing a strong sense of place and visual presence on the main road, which was designed as a lounge area for residents to relax and watch the world go by.
